John’s Story
From Apprentice Chef to QSHE Manager
Q: When did you join the Army?
A: Joined the Army in Jun 1984 as an Apprentice Chef and discharged on 1 Dec 2021 as a LE Maj
Q: What roles did you undertake?
A: Initially joined as a chef in the Army Catering Corps. Changed trade to Military Training Instructor in 1990.
Completed soldier career as RSM of 23 Pioneer Regt RLC in 2007.
Commissioned as Late Entry Officer 2007 to 2021, attended Staff College ICSC(L) 2015
Initial Staff Appt as SO2 Log for HQ BFG, also completed Sub-Unit Command and Staff Appt at Regional Command
Q: Did you serve internationally?
A: Undertook various tours including Iraq and Afghan and served in Germany for 15yrs mostly from 2007-2017.
Q: What is your role within Kuehne+Nagel?
A: I joined Kuehne+Nagel on 2 Dec 2021 as QSHE Manager for the Logistics BU at HMS Naval Base Portsmouth
Q: Talk to us about your transition from military to civilian life?
A: For me my transition was easy and painless. From day one the HR team were very helpful and supportive, they ensured all documentation was completed and submitted. As l already held security clearance, an added bonus which aided the smooth transition was the ease of having this transferred over.
Q: Making the move to civilian life, how has Kuehne+Nagel supported?
A: Kuehne+Nagel recognise the experience that comes with personnel from the military services if you don’t have the complete Qualifications, the ability to be trained on the job, learn and get obtain the qualifications is fully supported.
