From Service to Safety

Turning military experience into recognised safety and health career pathways.

Leaving the Armed Forces often means starting to think differently about your skills and experience. While military careers develop leadership, discipline, accountability and risk awareness, it is not always easy to explain how those strengths transfer into civilian roles.

For many service leavers, a career in safety and health can be a natural fit.

The ability to lead teams, make decisions under pressure, manage risk and protect the wellbeing of others are all highly valued across industries including construction, logistics, engineering, infrastructure and facilities management.

Through its partnership with the British Forces Resettlement Services (BFRS), IOSH is helping Armed Forces personnel and veterans turn those existing strengths into recognised civilian qualifications and long-term career opportunities.

Building on skills you already have

Many people leaving the Armed Forces already use safety and health skills every day, without even realising.

Following procedures. Managing operational risks. Maintaining standards. Looking after people and equipment. Leading teams in high-pressure environments. These are all skills that translate strongly into civilian operational management roles withing safety and health.

IOSH courses and professional qualifications are designed to help make that transition clearer, building on existing experience while providing certification and qualifications that civilian employers value and understand.

Working Safely

For those taking their first steps into civilian employment, IOSH Working Safely helps build on the safety awareness and responsibility already developed through military service.

The course provides a practical introduction to workplace safety and health, helping learners apply existing experience to civilian environments across sectors such as logistics, warehouse, manufacturing, engineering and Construction.

Managing Safely

Many service leavers already have significant experience leading teams, managing operations and making decisions in dynamic environments.

IOSH Managing Safely helps convert that operational leadership experience into recognised civilian safety and health management skills. The course focuses on practical workplace responsibilities including risk assessment, incident investigation and improving workplace safety performance.

It is particularly valuable for those moving into supervisory, operational or management roles.

Leading Safely

Senior Armed Forces personnel often already understand the importance of accountability, culture, operational effectiveness and leading people safely under pressure.

IOSH Leading Safely helps translate those strengths into civilian leadership and safety management responsibilities, focusing on how strong leadership supports organisational performance, workforce wellbeing and long-term success.

Supporting long-term career progression

Supporting long-term career progression

For some, awareness-level training may be the starting point. For others, previous operational and leadership experience may support progression towards more advanced qualifications such as the IOSH Level 3 Certificate or IOSH Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health.

These qualifications can help service leaders build on the skills they already possess, gain recognised civilian credentials and continue developing long-term careers across compliance, operations, construction, infrastructure, logistics and consultancy roles.

For eligible service leavers, Qualifications at Level 3 and above may also align with funded learning opportunities available through ELCAS (Enhanced Learning Credits Administration Service), supporting continued professional development during transition.

As careers progress, these Qualifications can also support progression towards IOSH membership, helping individuals continue building their professional knowledge, experience and leadership capability.

IOSH also provides access to professional networks, career development support and the IOSH jobs board, helping service leavers explore opportunities across industries actively looking for skilled professionals with leadership and operational experience.
