Chevron TM ‘The Highway to Victory’
BFRS member, Chevron TM is the proud recipient of the National Highways ACE Better Together Award 2021/22. They were a winner in the Health, Safety and Wellbeing Initiative of the Year category for “reducing incursion numbers using digital technology”.
Here is what they had to say about their journey to this award:
“The award submission focused on using digital technology to reduce the number of incursions across the Operations East Region CWF schemes. We faced a growing challenge caused by the rising number of incursions and confrontations. The most serious concern was, of course, the risk to road worker safety, but these incursions and confrontations were causing issues with the delivery of the works as road workers were being distracted by members of the general public who were often verbally or physically aggressive.
We worked with the ACE team and HRS to find a solution. The solution was to trial the installation of Intellicam® across all schemes with airlock systems in place.
The outcome of the trial was two-fold. There was a noticeable reduction in the number of incursions and confrontations recorded, which was the ultimate objective of the trial. 62 incursions were recorded in 2021, which has reduced to just 5 in the first 6 months of 2022.
Additionally, the gatemen and road workers advised that they felt safer and more protected due to the installation of the Intellicam® recording system. This is an excellent example of collaboration across the supply chain, which found a successful digital solution to a serious issue.”
Congratulations to all involved!
